Steel grade 1.4016 is currently the most used ferritic stainless steel grade in the world. This medium chromium steel corresponds to the industry standard of AISI 430. Chromium content of 16% gives better corrosion resistance and the grade is used in wide range of applications, mostly indoors.
Stainless steel type 1.4016 is also commonly known as grade 430. Type 430 stainless steel combines good corrosion resistance with good formability and ductility.
It is a ferritic, non-hardenable plain Chromium stainless steel with excellent finish quality.
Grade 430 also has excellent resistance to nitric attack, which makes it well suited to use in chemical applications. The most popular applications for 430 are in domestic appliances and decorative trim.
Property data given in this document is typical for flat rolled products covered by EN 10088-2:2005. ASTM, EN or other standards may cover products sold. It is reasonable to expect specifications in these standards to be similar but not necessarily identical to those given in this datasheet.
The main point is that the 1.4016 stainless steel belongs to the economical stainless steel category. And it is resistant to basic corrosive environments and to even some chemicals in low concentrations.
The resistance to acids in food, water, steam, and alcohol makes it highly suitable for making food and household products. Its resistance to nitric acid makes it well suited for use in applications.
Moreover, the ferritic nature of the 1.4016-grade stainless steel makes it resistant to the effects of stress corrosion cracking, which is a form of corrosion most of the conventional austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to.
The chemical composition of 1.4016 stainless steel is:
1.4016 steel chemical element | % present |
Carbon [Max] | 0.08% |
Manganese (Mn) [Max] | ≤1.50% |
Silicon (Si) [Max] | 1.00% |
Chromium (Cr) | 16.00 to 18.00% |
Phosphorus (P) [Max] | 0.040% |
Sulphur (S) | ≤ 0.030% |
Molybdenum (Mo) | ≤0.60% |
