Specification ASTM A312 covers cold worked austenitic stainless steel such as grade 347. Unlike some conventional steel alloys that are hardened by the use of heat treatment, the hardening of Stainless Steel 347 Seamless Pipe is achievable only via cold working. Since cold working is a process that does not use heat, there are some improvements in the overall aspects of the pipe.
Firstly, the surface finish of the SS 347 Welded Pipe is much better, in addition to achieving properties such as better reproducibility and interchangeability. Along with superior dimensional control, the ASTM A312 TP 347 Square Pipe could be imparted with directional properties as well. Secondly, problems associated with contamination are eliminated by cold working the material. Under this specification, every DIN 1.4550 schedule 40 pipe produced must undergo a series of tests including the weld decay test, a nondestructive electric test, or a hydrostatic test, grain size determination. Moreover, the SS UNS S34700 ERW Pipe is required to undergo mechanical tests like a transverse test or longitudinal tension test and flattening test, while also meeting the tensile strength and yield strength requirements of the specification.
Though like stainless steel 321, the SS 347H Rectangular Pipe is used for its ability to withstand heat, it is a colombium stabilized alloy, which gives it better mechanical properties.
