Type 409 stainless steel (UNS S40900) is a stable ferritic stainless steel that has better oxidation and corrosion resistance than carbon steel. The ease of manufacturing combined with its corrosion resistance and economy obviously expands its application in automotive exhaust and other non-automotive applications. It has enhanced molding properties and is called “high performance” or “supertype” in the industry.
409L grade (UNS S40903, EN 1.4512) is a low-carbon stable version of 409, composed of appropriate chromium, low carbon, and nitrogen components, and added titanium, all components are appropriate to make 409L grade products have certain performance, resistance Corrosion, weldability, and formability. Due to its low chromium content, grade 409L is another low-cost option for corrosion-resistant stainless steel.
409L grade has good heat resistance and corrosion resistance and is very suitable for non-corrosive or slightly corrosive environments or applications. It has excellent oxidation resistance and good welding performance at high temperatures and can be used in automobile exhaust pipes or petroleum equipment.

Type 409 stainless steel plate and 410 stainless steel are all high-strength stainless steel, (including chromium) but the temperature resistance is generally only about 500-750. This type of steel has the lowest chromium content of all stainless steel and is therefore inexpensive, making it ideal for use in environments where there is no corrosion or slight corrosion and partial slight rust is allowed. The type 409 stainless steel was originally designed for use in automotive exhaust system silencers (external corrosion). 410L stainless steel is commonly used in containers, buses, and long-distance large cars, and has recently been used as a frame for LCD monitors.
