Type 416 can be the first designated free-machining stainless steel, yet also it boasts the largest machinability among all stainless steel grades. The increased sulfur (0.15% at minimum) allows 416 for fast machining without clogging cutting machine. 416 stainless steel is hardenable through heat treatment, giving it enhanced strength and hardness. Just like any other 400 series stainless steel, 416 stainless steel lack that corrosion resistance of 300 series stainless steel.
416 stainless steel is widely known for its outstanding machinability and non-galling characteristics, incomparable among all stainless steels. Through heat treatment, 416 can achieve the highest hardness, strength and wear resistance. Its low frictional property reduces galling and seizing. Stainless steel 416 also features moderate corrosion resistance for it contains a certain amount of chromium (12% ~ 14%). It can resist corrosion of natural food acids, natural waters, and waste products, but not under salty atmosphere. 416 can maintain its corrosion resistance at temperatures below 648.89°C. It exhibits fair scaling resistance in intermittent service up to 760°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. 416 stainless steel always presents magnetism. It is moderately corrosion resistant with high strength on tempered and hardened delivery conditions, making it an ideal material for cutting tools.
